The American Quarter Horse Association, the self-described largest breed association in the world, registered its 5 millionth horse in January 2008. The AQHA started in 1941 with their first foundation sire ironically named, Wimpy. It used to be stated that names couldn't be "suggestive." Apparently times have changed. There are actually very few official rules for naming quarter horses now. Names must be unique although a name can be reused if the horse (whose name you want to use) is dead, doesn't have a record of winning anything, didn't start in a race, and doesn't have any offspring under the age of 10 that have won anything. The moniker must be no longer than 20 characters. For example IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE is 20 characters. It can't include punctuation. It can't include Roman numerals. It can include Arabic numerals, but only in a suffix. If you are particularly vexed by your American quarter horse's current registered name, you can change it, again, under certain circumstances and for a fee. Rules vary from breed registry to registry, of course. With 5 million quarter horses already registered you can see why so many people include bits to differentiate an already popular name. PEGASUS might be changed to DIANES PEGASUS, or LAST TANGO to LAST TANGO WITH BEAU. Another option is to add a title such as PIRATE PRINCE or DUCHESS OF DREAMS. Some people use alternate spellings such as HUGS AND KYSSES for HUGS AND KISSES. Some have left the spaces out like TENGALLONHAT. If you're looking for something no one has used yet one of the most promising areas of potentially unique horse names can be found in pop culture. Fifty years ago no one would have considered naming a pony DOT CALM or GUITAR HERO THREE.
I have followed the AQHA's rule of no punctuation in these pages. You may need to modify a name to conform to the rules of the particular breed registry to which you are applying. Some of the names fall into more than one category so you'll find some of them more than once. This is intended to be serious fun. Of the well over 9 million horses currently living in the United States very few are actually used as the owner's principal means of transportation or work.
